the native resolution on the laptop screen is 1280x800 i think, and the sony monitor can go up to 1600x1200. can i set my macbook so that the resolution size will be 1600x1200 when hooked up to the external monitor?

you are in a better position than us
try it and then you will have your answer
chances are if you can change the display setting
you may be able to go higher
You’ll actually be able to run in dual-screen mode, with the MBP’s screen at 1280×800 and the 17 inch Sony monitor running at 1600×1200. You’ll just need a Mini DisplayPort to VGA or DVI adapter, depending on the connection your monitor uses.
